My phone isn't connecting to my laptop. I've been working on this for 3 weeks. Can anyone help me?

I have the Verizon LG Dare and when i go into My Music on the menu, it says Play All, Shop, and then Sync. I connect my phone to the computer using the USB port. Once I click Sync it tries connecting for a little while. Then Found New Hardware comes up. I try to download it. And then it says it's disconnected because the connection failed. My phone tells me to check my caple connection to the computer. I'm 100% positive that it's connected. It also says V Cast Mobile Phone Internal Memory on top. I checked My Computer and it wasn't there. I can't insert a c.d. in my laptop. No device pops up in iTunes.
